Target, Amazon, Walmart. etc are all setting profit and sales records during this planneddemic. I hope they have to pay a certain tax from benefiting from the monopolized situation. I point to these managers who knowingly stocked 30 packs of TP and 6 packs of kleenex, boosting sales, now all you find is 4packs of tp, and singles of kleenex. We are business owners in Illinois and we have to pay 16K in taxes but have not had a fighting chance.

Their income increases, they'll pay more taxes. 21% to the federal government

If they're price gouging, they may be breaking laws

Amazon paid $0 in tax both 2017 and 2018 and just 1.2% on their $14B income for 2019

Other variables must be in play

1) Net operating loss carryovers from years they were losing money
2) Heavy investment in new assets
3) Credits for R & D
4) Earning and reporting income in other countries

There are legitimate reasons for some tax breaks, I'd have to know more specifics

And their employees all pay income taxes, a byproduct of creating jobs

All these stores turned record profit due to hoarding. People are still crazy constantly cleaning their own homes like someone is bringing the Corona virus in and it's sits on a countertop waiting to infect somebody. I think they already shown that getting the virus from a surface is fairly remote. You don't have to clean your home or apartment like it's an ICU ward at the hospital. The bottom line is these huge profits were driven by people fighting over a can of Lysol like it was Cabbage Patch Kid from many Christmases ago.

And those big companies have Tax departments (or accounting firms) that specialize in finding out how to minimize their taxes in whatever way possible.

Evasion of course, is another matter
